About the Reserve:
The reserve spans 951 hectares and includes a larger section of 556 hectares managed by Natural England as a statutory National Nature Reserve. Approximately 38 hectares are managed by the Trust under a license agreement with the Ministry of Defence, while 4 hectares are leased from Lincolnshire County Council. The Trust also owns about 3 hectares, including Sea View Field and Rimac Bridge.
The reserve features tidal sand and mudflats, salt and freshwater marshes, and sand dunes. The foreshore includes mud and silt flats with saltmarsh to the north and a narrower sandy beach to the south. The sand dunes are broader in the north, with an extensive freshwater marsh between two dune ridges. These dunes formed on a storm beach in the 7th to 8th centuries, with the second ridge developing in the mid-1800s after the diversion of the Great Eau. New dunes are currently forming along the southern half of the reserve.
